House Training a Beagle Puppy

April 21st, 2010

House training a beagle puppy can seem very intimidating at first. But beagles are a very intelligent breed of dog and actually respond well to training. They can be a bit stubborn however, and a beagle puppy can actually take up to a year to be fully house trained. Not to worry though, if you keep a good eye on your pup you can prevent accidents from occurring.

The main thing to remember when you first start house training a beagle puppy is that they need constant supervision. You will need to watch your pup at all times because like a little kid, beagles have a high tendency to get into trouble. They are very curious and have a very keen nose and love to follow it. This may make it a challenge, but if you are patient and consistent with your training, it will work out great.

Like any other breed of dog, you should start your puppy on a schedule as soon as possible. If you keep your puppy on a schedule you will have an easier time training him. Start by taking him outside after you feed him. This will ensure he relives himself outside and not on your carpet. Plan on taking him out every few hours if possible, or you could try crate training. Crate training is easy to do and most puppies respond well to it.

Feeding your beagle at the same time every day and not letting him eat when he wants is also recommended. This will keep your puppy's digestive track on a set schedule, making it easier to predict when you should take him outside to go to the bathroom. Feeding your puppy a high quality dog food is also recommended to keep him on a set schedule. Dogs need nutrition just like we do, and it will benefit your pup as well as your house training.

A beagle makes a great pet and although they may be a challenge to house train, it all worth it in the end. The thing you should remember is that you can house train your beagle at home. Training from home provides many benefits. You and your beagle will become close and it is a great bonding experience for both you and your dog. What more could you ask for?
