How to Stop an Adult Dog Peeing in the House

December 6th, 2009

The first question you might have is, can you stop and adult dog peeing in the house? For instance, can an adult dog of four years old be house trained? Yes it can.

Be prepared for it to take time though. He is so used to relieving himself anywhere he pleases in the house by now, that you are going to have to take some corrective measures to change this behaviour.

Be sure to begin by using a good cleaner to the areas where he has been urinating. This will remove the scent that has been attracting him to wee there every time. Also consider having the dog neutered, if this has not been done already.

Put an end to your dogs freedom to roam the house at will. Either crate him when you are absent from the home, or restrict him to a designated area, such as part of the kitchen, with appropriate arrangements for toileting of course.

Make it a habit to take him outside to toilet. When he performs, be sure to praise and reward him well the minute he finishes. This will help him understand what you want from him. It will also shorten the time it takes to house train him, if you are there outside with him when he toilets.

Sometimes mishaps happen, so be prepared for them and do not punish your dog for incorrect behaviour, because he will not understand, and this could lead to more problems. If he pees in the house while training, just clean it up and continue to house train him.
