Communicating Correctly With Your Puppy
Communication is an art. Generally, people speak for themselves; they think that the person with whom they are conversing understands and thinks in the same way which may not be the case. Hence, while conversing one should try to think from the other persons' point of view.
The same thing holds for the dog which builds up its responses and reflexes according to the training of the master. As per the actions and words of the master, the dog learns the rules and the correct behavior. Dogs loves to please master and shall go to any extend to do that. If you wish your dog to be well-behaved and disciplined, you need to teach it in a consistent manner, using similar words and actions for a particular lesson at all times.
For instance, dogs love to pamper the master when they come home by jumping on them. The master returns from play, and the dog greets him by jumping on him. It might get pampered. Now, if the master comes from office, the dog here might get a scolding or a slap. Now, the dog is bound to wonder that "The master pampered me earlier, now he scolds me? Why so?" The next time the master comes, the dog will wonder whether to jump or not. Repeated mixed reactions shall add to the confusion to the dog mind and it shall slowly stop trying to please. It becomes withdrawn, and shall start avoiding the master. It becomes scared to do anything.
Here, the master failed to understand that the dogs do not understand or analyze the situation in the manner as we people do. Dogs are unable to differentiate the clothes and the timings. They just understand that the master has returned home. Hence, it is up to the master to ensure that the dog understands that when it is acceptable to jump up at times but not always. They need to teach the dog the lessons of discipline plus when it is acceptable to do so. Hence, the next time they return home and if it is okay for the dog to jump on them, they can tell the dog by commanding them to "jump up". If they do not want their dogs to jump, they need to send some messages or signals, maybe by saying "Off!" or "Down!" Now, the dog will get a message that the master shall instruct it whether it is okay to jump or not. Hence, the dog becomes a well-behaved and disciplined one.
Remember that dogs' way of thinking is different and they need to be taught like kids. One should not assume that they shall learn to understand and analyze just as we do so as they are not humans. Hence, a consistent set of rules for a lesson is imperative for both. You can learn more of signal lessons through training classes by professionals, and trainers. You can find about them through libraries, pet stores, yellow pages and classified ads.
