October 16th, 2009

So you have bought a dog! Now is the time to make sure that it is house trained. After all, you don't want to spend your time cleaning up after it do you? Potty training a dog is the most important step in ensuring a happy animal and family. It can be time consuming, but the rewards make all the effort worthwhile. Follow these tips and you will soon have a well behaved dog that will be a pleasure to have around. These tips work just as well for older dogs as they do for puppies.

House Training Your Dog - The Basics

It is important to establish a routine for your new puppy or dog right away. Remember that a puppy under six months old can only hold it's bladder for a maximum of 4 hours, so you will need to give it regular opportunity to relieve itself throughout the day. You should take you puppy outside as soon as you get up in the morning and then half an hour after every meal. You should also let him out to do his business every hour or two. Always praise him when he goes to the toilet outside. If he has an accident indoors do not scold or punish him as this will not help. Dogs use their sense of smell to know where they can relieve themselves so make sure that you clean up any messes indoors. Do no use a a cleaning solution that contains vinegar or ammonia (the scent is too close to urine scent). You can use baking soda or club soda, or purchase special odor-eliminating cleaners at a pet supply store.

Signs your dogs needs to wee

An important part of house training your dog is looking out for signs that he needs to relieve himself and taking him outside before he does. Here are some of the signs you should look out for:

  • Sniffing the floor. Remember what I said earlier - dogs use their nose when locating a place to wee. A lot of sniffing the floor could indicate that he is looking for a place to go.
  • Whining or whimpering. This may be a sign that he is uncomfortable and needs to relieve himself.
  • Restlessness
  • Going around in circles and looking like he is hunting for something

Persistence and patience

House training your dog requires persistence and patience. It is essential that everyone in the family understands exactly what is required during the training process and that everyone follows through with the plan. It is important that everyone takes the dog to the same place every time it needs to go to the toilet, and that everyone uses the same command when telling him it is potty time. If everyone is consistent your dog will soon be fully house trained.
